Helios 44 vs 44-2 vs 44M

Just getting into vintage lenses and deciding between the Helios 44, Helios 44-2, and Helios 44M?
These are the three most accessible options. In this comparison, you’ll see the exact differences in color, contrast, swirl, and flare.

  • All images were shot with identical settings and composition. Only the lens was changed.
  • One base grade (exposure, contrast, white balance, and color) was applied to all lenses, so you’re seeing purely the difference in rendering.
  • Shot on a Panasonic Lumix S5 (full frame) in V-Log (10-bit) for maximum image information.

ℹ️ The information in this blog is 100% my own opinion. After 10 years in video production and with a collection of more than 25 Helios lenses, this is based on real-world experience, not specs.

This is not a technical deep dive, but a short and clear introduction for anyone getting into vintage lenses and wanting to understand what to expect visually from these three variants.

1. Color Rendering

What do we mean by color rendering?
Color rendering is how a lens captures colors. Not just how “accurate” they are, but also whether they appear warmer, cooler, richer, or flatter. This directly affects the mood of your image.

Helios 44

Warm image, especially visible in the red of the railing. Colors are slightly more saturated and appear vivid.

Helios 44-2

Cooler and more neutral image; the red of the railing slightly shifts toward blue.

Helios 44M

Most neutral and color-accurate; the blue water in particular stands out more clearly here.

💬 Out of these three photos, I think the 44M is the strongest.

Helios 44

Clearly warmer. Reds and yellows are enhanced.

Helios 44-2

Cooler and more neutral. Closer to “real life.”

Helios 44M

Best balance. Natural, but not boring.

💬 For me, the 44-2 wins here.

2. Contrast

What do we mean by contrast?
Contrast is the difference between light and dark in your image. Higher contrast gives a punchy look, while lower contrast appears softer and more cinematic.

Helios 44

High contrast, deep shadows, warm image

Helios 44-2

Lower contrast, lighter shadows

Helios 44M

In between, but leans more neutral and cleaner

💬 Conclusion:
Want punch → 44
Want a softer image → 44-2
Want balance → 44M

3. Swirl & Bokeh

What is swirl bokeh?
Swirl bokeh is a swirling effect in the background where light points appear to rotate in circles around your subject. This is exactly what Helios lenses are known for.

Helios 44

Clean, but warm

Helios 44-2

Softest bokeh, more detail in the shadows

Helios 44M

Clean and consistent

💬 Honestly: there’s practically no difference between these three. The swirl is simply identical across the 44, 44-2, and 44M.

If you look closely, you’ll notice a slight color cast on the tripod in the 44-2 and 44M. That’s most likely caused by the lighting used, not the lens.

The only real difference here: the Helios 44 is once again slightly warmer.

4. Flare & Backlight

What do we mean by flare?
Flare occurs when strong light (such as the sun) hits your lens directly. This can create glow, loss of contrast, or even rainbow-like effects.

Helios 44

Subtle flare, few artifacts, the cleanest look

Helios 44-2

Clear color cast + rainbow flare
Most “dreamy,” but also the least controllable

Helios 44M

Strongest flare + clear rainbow, but less color cast than the 44-2

💬 Flare winner: 44M
Cleanest: 44
Most dreamy: 44-2

Final conclusion: which one should you buy?

  • Do you want vintage warmth and character?
→ Go for Helios 44 (silver KMZ)
  • Do you want a dreamy, soft, more unpredictable look?
    → Go for Helios 44-2
  • Do you want a balanced, reliable all-rounder?
    → Go for Helios 44M

👉 Reality: you can’t really go wrong here. They’re all extremely similar. Just pick one and start shooting.

One thing to keep in mind: almost every 44-2 has oil on the aperture blades. This can introduce internal reflections inside the lens, which likely explains why the 44-2 in our test showed stronger flare during the flare test.

If you want consistency → 44M.
If you want character → 44 or 44-2.

Important to keep in mind

  • Swirl is nearly identical across all Helios 44 variants
  • The differences mainly come down to coating, contrast, and color
  • Your look is influenced more by lighting + distance + composition than by the exact version
💬 Now what? Stop endlessly comparing. Buy one and start shooting 😉 Pro tip: you start with one Helios… and before you know it, you’ve got ten. Buy what appeals to you and figure out what fits your style. Looking for a swirly bokeh lens with a wider field of view? Check out: There’s a lot more out there than just the 44 series. I also have the Helios 44M-4, -M5, -M6, and -M7. I’ll test those later. The best lens isn’t the one you’re still doubting, it’s the one you’ll be shooting with tomorrow.
